Few topics in the tyre industry are as contentious as part worn tyres. Consumer groups warn against them; millions of UK drivers buy them every year. The honest answer is that part worn tyres can be perfectly safe - but only when sourced from a reputable supplier who properly inspects and grades them.
What Is a Part Worn Tyre?
A part worn tyre is a used tyre removed from a vehicle - either because the vehicle was written off, the owner upgraded, or the tyre was replaced as part of a set. In good condition, a part worn tyre can have 4-6mm of tread remaining - more than twice the legal minimum.
In the UK, selling part worn tyres is legal but subject to regulations under the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994. Legally sold part worn tyres must be marked 'PART WORN' in letters at least 4mm high, have no structural damage, meet the legal minimum tread depth, and have no cuts, bulges or exposed cord.
The Problem - Not All Suppliers Are Reputable
The issue isn't part worn tyres themselves - it's that enforcement of the regulations is inconsistent. Studies have found that a significant proportion of part worn tyres sold in the UK fail to meet the legal requirements, with hidden damage, repaired punctures that aren't disclosed, or tread depths below the legal minimum.
A 2020 TyreSafe investigation found that nearly 98% of part worn tyres sold at visited outlets were illegal or unsafe. This statistic is frequently cited - but it reflects the worst of the market, not a properly operated supplier.
What to Look For When Buying Part Worn Tyres
- Visible 'PART WORN' marking stamped on the tyre - legally required.
- Tread depth of at least 3mm (we check for 4mm+ at Lux Tyres).
- No bulges, cuts, cracks or lumps on the sidewall.
- No exposed or damaged bead area.
- No previous repair patches visible on the inside of the tyre (ask to see inside).
- Original tyre label intact if possible - tells you the age and specification.
When Part Worn Tyres Make Sense
Part worn tyres are a sensible choice for drivers on a tight budget who need a safe, legal tyre quickly. They're also worth considering for a second car that does low mileage, or as a temporary solution while saving for premium tyres on a performance vehicle.
They are not suitable for high-performance driving, for vehicles that regularly carry heavy loads, or for tyres that have clearly been repaired or show any signs of structural compromise.
