A flat tyre is one of the most common roadside emergencies in the UK. Whether it happens on the M62, a quiet country lane or right outside your house, knowing exactly what to do can keep you safe and get you moving again as quickly as possible.
Step 1 - Stay Calm and Pull Over Safely
The moment you notice a flat tyre - a sudden pulling to one side, a flapping or thumping sound, or a loss of control - ease off the accelerator gradually. Do not slam the brakes.
Signal, check your mirrors, and move to the left as smoothly as possible. If you're on a motorway, get onto the hard shoulder with your wheels turned away from the carriageway. If you're on a normal road, find a flat, stable surface away from traffic.
Step 2 - Make Yourself Visible
Switch on your hazard lights immediately - even before you've fully stopped. Once stationary, apply the handbrake, switch off the engine and put on a reflective jacket if you have one.
If you're on the motorway hard shoulder, exit the vehicle through the passenger door and stand behind the barrier. Never stand between your car and moving traffic.
Place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind the vehicle on a normal road. Do not use a warning triangle on a motorway.
Step 3 - Assess the Situation
Look at the damaged tyre. Is it a slow puncture (tyre still partially inflated) or a full blowout (tyre completely flat or shredded)? This affects your options.
Check whether your vehicle has a spare tyre, a space-saver spare, or a tyre repair kit with sealant. Many modern cars no longer carry a full spare.
Step 4 - Your Options
- Change the wheel yourself - only if it's safe to do so, you have a full spare (not a space-saver for extended driving), and you're not on a motorway.
- Use a tyre sealant kit - temporary fix for small punctures; not suitable for blowouts or sidewall damage.
- Call a mobile tyre fitter - the quickest and safest option. A mobile fitter comes to you, wherever you are, with the right tyre already loaded.
- Call breakdown recovery - slower and more expensive than a mobile tyre fitter in most cases.
